The idea of More Than Music brought Chris and Thibault together to engage musicians, artists, and those who surround them to talk about how their pursuits have affected the rest of their lives. The often overlook reality is that dedicating oneself to ones art is not all about the euphoric moments of creation and expression. It requires a commitment that can take precedence over almost everything else in your life, resulting in lost relationships, financial hardships, alcohol and drug addictions, a strong sense of isolation and so much more. The pursuit of art and the idea of suffering for it are traits that go against what society portraits as important to life. There are dangers, pitfalls, and unhealthy patterns that can come in living an inspired and dedicated life to the arts. More than music is a podcast that engages our guests into a reflection of how they navigate themselves to try and find harmony, balance and more importantly what they do to maintain it.

S01.E07 - Chris Colohan
Friday Apr 29, 2022
Friday Apr 29, 2022
Chris Colohan is somewhat of a mythical figure in the hardcore scene. He has fronted some bands that have attained cult like status such as Cursed, Left For Dead, The Swarm, Burning Love, Ruination, Countdown To Oblivion, and his current project Sect.
He has released records on almost all formats, and we say this because Cursed released an 8 track last year. He used to run a record label called High Anxiety, He has had multiple art exhibitions, he has published two books, "Negative Space", and "No he is not sleeping". He is a powerful magnate in the cooking world with Vegan Magic.
He has travelled the world playing music and even though his body has started to rebel and realize how old he is, his brain and heart will never acknowledge it and he’ll always keep moving on. Hence the mythology surrounding Chris Colohan.
I’m sure anyone who knows Chris can imagine the eye roll and the humorous vitriol that is about to come out of his mouth over this intro.

Thursday Apr 14, 2022
Matty Grace is a musician from the East Coast of Canada who has been in so many bands that it’s almost impossible to count. Outta Controller, Fat Stupids, Weekend Dads, Sore Spots, Future Girls, Modern Cynics, Century Egg, Cluttered (who just won the Music Nova Scotia Loud Recording of the year Award) and she performs as a solo artist and let’s be honest, I’m sure I’ve missed at least a dozen more.
She has been a staple in the Halifax DIY punk community forever and the bands she has been in have releases on labels from all over the world. At the end of February of this year she moved to Ottawa and already has a new band, Crisis Party, with some of Ottawa’s friendliest punks.
Matty is a very active trans advocate who has been dealing with her own dysphoria with a huge support network based on how great she is as a person.

He hails from the East Coast of Canada and lived in Toronto for many years when he and his bandmates in Horses moved there and recently he has been living in LA but that may be coming to an end. He has played in multiple bands, including some of my favourite bands, period, Atlas, Horses, Attention, Threes, Found Objects, Downers, supporting Malcolm Bauld, Greg Macpherson, and I’m sure a ton more.
He has filmed numerous music videos for his own and his friends bands going back over a decade, and runs a record label called Must Be Nice that puts out his and his friends records. He has created so many tour and show posters.
He released an award winning, well-received feature film called Modern Classic, as well as numerous award winning shorts that he wrote or co-wrote, directed, and acted in. He wrote, voiced and animated a short series called Night Drives. He released a graphic novel called Visitors. Maybe later in the episode we’ll talk a bit about Hoaxes… And if we don’t, look it up.
But to pay the bills, he is a very in demand creator and director for commercials for major brands and has representation all over the world.

Friday Feb 18, 2022
Chris met Svenja at the Rhinos Feroces festival, in France, in 2017 when she was on tour as the merch manager for Jaya The Cat. They have kept in touch digitally over the years and have always made plans to hang out when they think their touring schedules will be nearby but the touring life takes you all over the place. Then the pandemic hit March 2020 and all touring stopped. She is a highly respected freelance photographer, a retouching specialist, a driver, roadie, tech, tour manager, and anything else you can think of related to the traveling circus known as live music. Here’s to hoping that we can see each other again in some random place on this planet doing what we love in 2022.
